Supreme Court Justice Calls For Protection Of Religious Freedom

United States – Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito warned that a “wind is picking up that is hostile to those with traditional moral beliefs.”

Speaking at an event sponsored by Advocati Christi, a group of lawyers and judges who are Roman Catholic and seek to “provide an opportunity for lawyers learn about the Catholic faith and Catholic social teaching and to help them integrate these into their life and practice.

Quoting Dylan, he said, “You don’t need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows” then added, “A wind is picking up that is hostile to those with traditional moral beliefs.”

He expressed his concerned that the nation’s commitment to religious liberty is being tested post-Obergefell. Reading from his dissent on the landmark decision, he said he believed it would be used to “vilify those who disagree, and treat them as bigots.”

The Associated Press reports that Alito closed the nearly 45-minute long speech with a call to action.

“We are likely to see pitched battles in courts and Congress, state legislatures and town halls. But the most important fight is for the hearts and minds of our fellow Americans. It is up to all of us to evangelize our fellow Americans about the issue of religious freedom” he said.
