The Boston Globe reports a local chapter of the Satanic Temple told the Boston City Council president that it would be a “breach of the First Amendment” for them to turn down the request to give the invocation that kicks off council meetings..

The Satanists complain that those who normally give the opening prayer are overwhelmingly Christian.

So far, no city council members have invited the Satanists to give the invocation.

Boston City Council President Michelle Wu explained that each member of the council is allowed to invite several people to give invocations over the course of the year.

“It’s individual councilors’ chooses who they invite,” Wu told the Globe. “It’s not based on anyone’s religious preference, but it does often recognize figures that have done work in the community and are representative of the district.”

Other Satanic Temple chapters have made similar requests in other cities.
